Message

Dear Global Education Seminar participants,

Philip Hawke from the University of Shizuoka here. I will be giving a lecture called "Simplerpresentations for clearer scientific messages: Using simpler slides, grammar, and vocabulary tomake your English presentation easier to understand" at the upcoming GE Seminar. I would liketo propose a slightly different lecture style from past seminar lectures.

If you are interested, I would like to have a "lecture-workshop" with you. I will spend most of thetime lecturing, but I will also have short "discussion breaks" in which I will ask you to talk with afew other participants about the topic I have just spoken on. To make this discussionmore interesting and useful, if you are interested, I suggest that you bring an old PowerPointpresentation in English or Japanese on your laptop computer (or printed out) to show a few ofyour slides to the other participants. For example, after I talk about effective slide design, youcan show one of your slides to the others and discuss its strengths and weaknesses.

Just to be clear: You do not need to give a presentation! (In fact, there will be no time to do so.)Please just consider bringing a few slides from an old presentation for discussion.

If you do not want to show other people your slides, that is also fine. Please just talk to otherparticipants about theirs.

At the beginning of my talk, I will ask all of you if you would like to have this kind of"lecture-workshop". If not so many people are interested, I will just give a regular lecture. Eitherlecture style is fine with me.

I look forward to meeting you at the seminar.

Best regards,

Phil Hawke
